Natural Resources
In China there is a desert called the Takla Makan Desert here many oil is found. Oil workers in this area need to support extreme conditions but the oil drilling never stops. The amount of soil found beneath the Takla Makan Desert is 74 billion barrels, three times more than the United States’ s soil. If this is correct, China will have enough oil to power their factories, but if this wasn’t, China will have to import oil or bring it from other countries.
The two Koreas have a small amount of natural resources. You can find many coal and iron in North Korea but not in South Korea. The two Koreas don’t share their natural resources, that is why North Korea is a developing country and South Korea is a developed country. A developing country is one that has low industrial production and little technology. A developed country is a country with many industries and a developed economy. South Korea imports products because it has limited resources but it also exports manufactured goods. To export means to sell products to other countries.
Parts of East Asia has large forests but people don’t treat them carefully. People don’t replace the trees that they cut down. Farmers that need wood to warm their homes cut trees without caring. This situation is so serious that some countries need to import wood.
East Asia is a perfect place for producing water power because of it's rugged mountains and heavy rainfall. Building dams to collect water is expensive but building water plants that produce hydroelectricity is even more expensive. Hydroelectricity plants use running water to generate electricity.
In the Pacific Ocean where cold and warm currents meet, tiny plants grow. This plant attract fish. Many people use poles and nets to catch fish, and some people get help by trained birds. There are also huge boats from corporations that catch large amounts of fish and shellfish.
People in East Asia also practice aquaculture which is sea farming. In bays people raise fish in large cages. Artificial reefs are used as homes for shrimp and oysters. China's rivers and lakes also provide a big quantity of fish.
East Asia has a large population, so they need to farm to feed them. East Asia have a lot of mountains and plateaus so they have little land to farm. In China, Japan, and some parts of Korea, farmers make ledges that are like flat areas in the form of stairs used for farming, this ledges are called terraces. Terraces are made to make farming possible on mountains and plateaus. In China, farmers usually plant one type of crop between the rows. Farmers use the sides of the roads and railways lines for planting. People also practice double- cropping that is when climate and soil is good enough to grow two crops on the same land and on the same year.
Southern farmers are allowed to grow three crops in a year. Rice seeds, are grow in small fields in southern Japan. When the seed is like a foot high they planted again in a larger field after the wheat has been harvested. In order to get advantages of their land, farmers use their local conditions to work for them.
In northern Japan, farmers grow a special rice that grows very fast. In Japan and other parts of Asia, cattle and other types of livestock are rare. Crops take up less space than animals, planting crops produce more food than raising animals. The farmers from East Asia will continue finding better ways to farm. The farmers are trying to find new crops with larger fields. They are also finding for better fertilizers and better ways of managing farms. They have to be able to keep feeding East Asia's growing population. In East Asia people prefer to plant crops instead of raising animals. Farmers get more food from planting than from raising animals. East Asians will continue to look for better ways to farm to feed their large population.
