 China

A. Tradition and Change

 1. When China's government turned to be communist, few nations world-wide were their friends.

a.The United States turned to be nationalist and the Soviet Union didn't support China anymore.

 2. At first, having a communist government was hard; chinese were very poor, they used few machinery.

 3. Under Mao's rule, the government took over land, business, and factories, so everyone worked for the government as equals, still he wasn't   satisfied; economy didn't develop fast.

 4. Mao decided to make a huge change; radical. He made "The Great Leap Forward"; he made people work in large communes without experience. For China this was a huge step back. Many unexperienced people worked with steel and ended up dead.

 5. After this fall, Mao started the Cultural Revolution, this consisted in turning students against their parents and teachers who supported nationalism instead of what Mao wanted; communism. Mao choosed students for this role because they didn't know if nationalism was better.

 6.  Students became a band called the Red Guard; but they begun to destroy the nation and threaten Mao's government. The Red Guard endes up imprisioned. The Cultural Revolution lasted 3 years.

B. The Growth of Taiwan

 1. When the communists defeated the nationalists, nationalists went to Taiwan and formed a new government called The Republic of China, which was based on free enterprise, in which people are free to make their own business, make a profit, and choose their jobs (like here in Colombia).

 2. Taiwan's free enterprise was a powerful economy in Asia; it helped them improve their country by making new ports like the one here in Cartagena.

 3. Taiwan and China were fighting for who was the province of who. Taiwan had support from other countries because it sold electronic products to the world. Taiwan's economy and way of life has improved since then.

C. China Faces It's Challenges

 1. On the other side, other countries didn't like to trade with China. Mao ruled badly; he hurt his conutry so the communist decided to make new rules to secure the country.

 2. China decided to improve their relationship with western countries and by doing this, it began to trade.

 3. After Mao's death, better leaders came to power and acept some free enterprise. China was allowed to enter the United Nations.

D. China Today

1.Although  China's goverment isn't fair it has made friends with other countries, and today it is very powerfull.
